Blog 11 !
For this weeks blog I decided to listen to "Night of the Living Baseheads" by Public Enemy. This song is something that I would never choose to listen to on my own. I picked this song because I think that way Public Enemy uses this song to inform a community about a problem is really interesting. The song opens with a recording of Malcom X and most listeners would think that Public Enemy was using this to look at the relationship between the rising sales of cocaine to systematic problems. However, Public Enemy uses their platform to tell the blatant truth of the situation. Comparing with many preceding Black Nationalist leaders, they are not sugar coating a truth. It is a way to express reality that may not be discussed in media. Many artists write songs about their experiences, but I think that this is different. Public Enemy is not just writing about their experiences, but they write as if their music is a form of media. It highlights many topics that are not talked about in media and should be because they are important topics to discuss. It also causes media to reach a different demographic. I think that in 1988, most of the people who listen to this genre of music is also not watching the news or reading the newspaper. So, it becomes a cultural channel of important issues.
Hi Elley, I found your post really interesting, and it was fun to read! I don't think I would listen to this song by my own choice either just because it's not in my normal stylistic range. However, I appreciate the message they were trying to share through their lyrics. Thanks for your post!
ReplyDeleteHi Elley! I liked how you clarified the message of the song by claiming that the lyrics informed the public of the facts of multiple situations. I agree that Public Enemy’s song “Night of the Living Baseheads” was used as a platform to spread the truth. I believe that the recording of Malcolm X, heard in the beginning, was an effective way to attract listeners and spread the message.
